This part of Laos holds a special place for me as I traveled there on a whim but what I didn’t expect was the absolute abundance of natural beauty and hospitality of the locals. The people here are somewhat removed from the hustle of Vientiane and have a certain charm to their nature. We hired a local driver that took us around to see the local sites. Here are a few of the places:

Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars in XiangKhouang is a mysterious and fascinating archaeological site. Spread across the rugged landscape, you’ll find hundreds of large stone jars, some weighing up to several tons. The origin and purpose of these jars remain a mystery, adding to the intrigue and allure of the site. As you explore the plains, you’ll witness the sheer scale and ancient craftsmanship of these stone relics.

The main site known as Site 1 captivates visitors with its collection of massive stone jars, some dating back over 2,000 years.  Beyond Site 1, exploring the smaller jar sites reveals additional clusters of jars, each with its own unique characteristic

There is a visitors center where you must purchase an entry ticket which include a shuttle ride to the main plain of jars site. Here you are free to roam the area. Be sure not to climb or disgrace these relics in any way as they hold cultural significance to the locals.

Hmong Village

The XiangKhouang province in Laos is home to a significant Hmong population. The Hmong community is considered one of the prominent ethnic groups in the region. The Hmong people have a rich cultural heritage and are known for their distinct traditions, vibrant clothing, and intricate needlework. Engaging with the local Hmong community provides an opportunity to learn about their fascinating customs, sample their traditional cuisine, and appreciate their contributions to the cultural fabric of XiangKhouang. 

Local tour companies offer homestays and excursions to local villages where you can get a deep look and experience the life of this important ethnic group.

UXO Information Center

The UXO Information Center in XiangKhouang plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the issue of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Laos. This educational facility provides visitors with valuable information about the history, impact, and ongoing efforts to address UXO contamination. Through exhibits, documentaries, and interactive displays, visitors gain insights into the devastating legacy of UXO and the work being done to clear affected areas. The center serves as a platform for advocacy, education, and support, promoting a safer future for the people of XiangKhouang and raising awareness about the importance of UXO clearance and risk education in Laos.

Phonsavan Market

The Phonsavan Market in XiangKhouang offers a vibrant and authentic shopping experience. With a wide array of stalls and vendors, this bustling market showcases the local culture and traditions. Visitors can browse through an assortment of goods, including fresh produce, handicrafts, clothing, and local delicacies. The market is a hub of activity, filled with colorful displays, friendly vendors, and the aromatic scents of street food. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, interact with locals, and discover unique souvenirs to take home. Situated in Xiang Khouang, just a short distance from the city center, Wat Piawat is a significant Buddhist temple with a rich history.
