Luang Prabang is a place where travelers go to rest. To rest their bodies, minds and spirits. This is what I felt when I found myself there for 5 days. Unable to put it into words but Luang Prabang offers charm, beauty, enchantment for those willing to let it in.

Kuang Si Falls

Kuang Si Falls, a magnificent natural attraction near Luang Prabang, Laos, is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. To reach Kuang Si Falls, you can take a short and scenic journey of about 30 kilometers south of Luang Prabang. The journey itself offers picturesque views of rural landscapes and traditional villages. At the time of writing this you can hire a tuk tuk for roughly 300,000 – 500,000 kip. For that the driver will stay until your visit to the falls is over and drive you back to town.

Before you can enter the park area there is an admission fee you must pay. This includes the shuttle drive up to the park. Some choose to walk it but it can be exhausting in the heat of the day.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the breathtaking sight of cascading turquoise waters, surrounded by lush greenery. The falls consist of multiple tiers, creating pools of varying sizes, ideal for swimming and cooling off in the refreshing waters. The main waterfall, with its impressive 50-meter drop, is a sight to behold.

Take your time to explore the area, following the well-maintained trails that lead you through the tropical forest. Along the way, you’ll encounter smaller waterfalls, tranquil streams, and picturesque picnic spots. Don’t forget to visit the  Bear Rescue Center located in the park, where you can observe adorable rescued bears in a natural habitat.

Kuang Si Falls is not just a visual delight; it also offers opportunities for adventure and relaxation. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool pools, hike to the top of the falls for panoramic views, or simply relax and enjoy the serene ambiance of this natural wonder. Wat Xieng Thong

A stunning Buddhist temple renowned for its exquisite architecture and cultural significance. Located near the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. It is roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the night market this ancient temple stands as a testament to Lao craftsmanship and spirituality. Adorned with intricate carvings, gilded decorations, and a mesmerizing tiered roof, Wat Xieng Thong offers visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Laos. 

Be sure to be there bright and early as there is usually a crowd. Having the space to yourself is truly worth it.

Alms Giving Ceremony

Experience the spiritual essence of Luang Prabang with its famous alms giving morning ceremony. As the sun gently rises over the city, observe the devout locals lining the streets, offering food to saffron-robed monks. The serene procession creates a deeply moving sight, reflecting the deep Buddhist traditions of the region. Participate respectfully by making offerings and observing the ritual with reverence. This ancient custom allows visitors to witness the spiritual devotion and cultural heritage of Luang Prabang firsthand. The alms giving ceremony is a unique and humbling experience that offers a glimpse into the religious and peaceful way of life in this enchanting city.

In order to view this ceremony one must be on the main street by 5:30am.

Night Market

Located in the heart of Luang Prabang, the city’s night market is a bustling hub of activity that comes alive as the sun sets. Stroll through a vibrant array of stalls and discover an assortment of handicrafts, textiles, artwork, and local souvenirs. The market showcases the rich cultural heritage of Laos, with traditional goods handcrafted by local artisans. Indulge in the aromas of sizzling street food and sample local delicacies. The night market offers a unique atmosphere where you can immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and flavors of Luang Prabang while finding treasures to take home as cherished mementos.

Mount Phou Si

Rising majestically in the heart of Luang Prabang, Laos, Mount Phou Si offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surrounding landscapes. Located in the hearth of town, this sacred hill is a revered pilgrimage site for locals and visitors alike. Ascend the 328 steps to the summit, passing by ornate temples and Buddha statues along the way. At the top, be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town, the flowing rivers, and the lush green countryside. As the sun sets, Mount Phou Si becomes an enchanting spot to witness the golden hues enveloping the landscape, creating a truly magical experience. 

As with most attractions there is an entrance fee  after you climb the first set of stairs. 

Again for the best viewing be sure to head there early before the crowds of tour buses arrive.

Royal Palace

The Royal Palace, also known as the Haw Kham. This elegant and ornate palace, once the residence of Laos’ royal family, showcases a blend of traditional Lao and French colonial architecture. Step inside to discover exquisite artifacts, royal regalia, and stunning religious art that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region. The palace also houses the Royal Museum, offering insightful exhibits on Lao history and royal life.

As with most attractions there is an entrance fee .

This area can get crowded at times. Please be a aware that in order to enter the building you must wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders for men and for women a long skirt/dress is recommended as well as covering your shoulders.
